Elizabeth Hiltz is a Connecticut native, a soccer mom and a prolific artist.

As a child, Hiltz drew constantly. Her mother even found drawings on her sheets and under her pillow when tucking her in. But it was oil painting and color that grabbed her interest above all else when at age 10 she attended a painting class with her grandmother.

By 18, it was clear that Hiltz would major in art. She earned a BA in studio art from Mount Holyoke College and attended the Tyler School of Art in Rome, Italy, in her junior year. Post-college, Hiltz became an accomplished web designer. In 1995, she was accepted to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where she received a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in painting.

Returning to Connecticut, Hiltz set up a studio and joined the Stamford Art and Loft Artist associations. She continued her web design, working primarily in advertising, on such accounts as Delta Airlines, Enfamil, IBM and Sony — all the while painting rigorously and building her following.

Through a marriage, the birth of a daughter, her husband’s car accident and a long and daunting recovery, Hiltz’s fascination with people and exploring our intricate and complicated connections to each other only intensified.

A series explores how shared experiences such as sleep humanize us. Common perceptions of strength and vulnerability are flipped on their head, their intertwined natures revealed. She is now exploring portraiture with a strong narrative component, but which also expresses our need for human connection, trust and security.

Hiltz has exhibited extensively in national and local venues, including the Red Trike Gallery in Chicago, The HBO Gallery in NYC, the Caron Gallery in Chester, CT, and the Handwright Gallery in New Canaan, CT. Her work has been chosen for entry in the prestigious Art of the Northeast show (twice) and in a show at the University of Bridgeport juried by Philip Pearlstein. Her paintings are in 30+ private collections via commissions and sales.

"The people in our lives are irreplaceable and so are the bonds and the memories. I’ve always been a figure painter. Now I’m intrigued to honor the individual and tell their
story while capturing a little of how they’ve touched our lives."
